8 pence

So let it accrue. Eventually somebody will write it off. If you want to deal with it then next time you go to the bank pay the amount over the counter.

If they had any sense they would program the computer to identify taxpayers who should not need to submit a tax return and at the same time write off any small balances outstanding.

Personally not much, but you could fax the request. I would just be inclined to leave it on the statement until it vanishes.

Now come on Peter you know HMRC have no one with programming skills, it's all outsourced to the good ole USofA who program the computers to follow set rules that can then be overidden by inexperienced/overworked/underpaid/incompetant (delete as necessary) staff.

Basically the payslip would not have been issued automatically and was sent out manualy. The initial capture of the return should have been changed to create no charge for this final return.

That's why I said if they had any sense!

Not if there was a balance outstanding from previous years.

Quiet right Peter, I worded that incorrectly my point is that this return has been manually dealt with at some stage as it was a final return. At this stage the 8p should have been wiped off the system as the cost of collection would be far greater.

Nothing. You're expected to deal with your tax affairs in your free time.

Because they can't count. :-(

Which is what I said .. or were you just agreeing?

But the point I am making is you don't have to deal with it. You can leave the debt there and earn or you can waste time dealing with it.

I had a few pence outstanding on tax once and I just paid by cash at a bank.

And the point *I* am making is that the choice isn't between dealing with it and earning, but between dealing with it and enjoying yourself (or resting, or wasting time in front of the telly). For most people, earning isn't something they can just turn on at will during odd moments when they have nothing better to do.

Contrary to your own advice?

But I thought you got an automatic 100 pds fine if you don't pay by the deadline.

I understand the fine is the *lower* of £100 and the amount owed. They may well levy fines in whole pounds only, rounded, so if you owe

8.5p, the fine would be £0.

That's for missing the deadline for filing a tax return. And is the lower of 100 or the tax unpaid at 31st Jan.

Late payment of tax incurs daily interest (currently 8.5% pa), and then additional penalties on specific succeeding dates (IIRC, 5% of the tax unpaid).

Pay over the counter! What is the fun in that?

Agreed. :-)

I honestly do not care enough, and I am certainly not going to spend any time or money, and am simply musing on the stupidity and expense. :-)

They have told me I do not have to pay (ie no fine) but that interest will accrue if I do not.

No, it was an option. As you said some people can't turn on and off earnings at will. I am able too. Similarly, some people don't find it efficient to make small payments but either my wife or myself regularly go to the bank.

Ronald, you are getting more and more like Tim!
