Abbey 50+ Saver

Rec'd a mailshot from Abbey today with the letter having an opening strapline indicating a new savings account called "Abbey 50+ Saver". My initial reaction? Why on earth have they sent me a mailshot for a product I can't apply for? I'm 36 for goodness sake - and they should know that because they'll have my details on their records. Only after reading the contents of the letter I realise that the 50+ relates to offering a 0.50% bonus on their saving rates until 1 April 2008.

Wonder how many other people will fall foul of the same mistake and throw the letter in the bin without even reading the contents.

I blame stupid Abbey Marketing department - overpaid, under experienced media students who don't know what they're doing.

Are they allowed to be ageist?? Why should they be able to offer an extra .50% to over 50's? What makes them so special that under 50's are not>?

Nationwide offer an account for over 65s only. And what about Child Trust Funds? Could you claim discrimination for not being able to open one of these, because you're *not* a child?

In a similar vein, some men are getting good car insurance quotes from !

Over 50's savings accounts offer less than most online accounts. They're just the latest marketing strategy to sucker in the old, the vulnerable and the gullible -

Even most children can't have one of these! You have to be born after some date in

2002 IIRC.
