So wouldn't it be more cost-effective (if not as straightforward) just issue a county court (small) claim, rather than letting/hoping your insurance company will earn their pay?

Especially if it is a high-value claim, the insurance company has motivation to get it back themselves, as they can get it in one go straight away rather than having to claw it back from increased premiums over a number of years. So in this case your and their interests amount to the same thing.
Not everyone has time and desire to follow things through the courts themselves when someone else is quite willing and able to pursue such things for them.

One that wasn't was a Audi TT with just its front wheels spinning - I was sure they were all four wheel drive until I checked and found they do cheapy versions.
It may invalidate the policy - I do not see how it can be "fraud"
Because you would be obtaining an insurance policy by deception at your next renewal, at the very least.

50:50 still exists as accidents can fall into this catagory.
