All "Scope" shops to close?

Scope used to be "The Spastics Society". My wife works as a volunteer in one of their shops and says that *all* their national shops are to close - that it was in the newspapers over the weekend.

Can't find anything on the Internet. If I can buy jeans in Tesco for £3, shoes for £12, and everything else I want on Ebay, I can't see us rushing out to buy overpriced tat in a Charity Shop.

Is it true and if so is it a trend?

It was mentioned in Private Eye magazine that they're to focus much more on lobbying the Government, as it's more effective than selling stuff in charity shops.

Also isn't eBay having an effect? That is, whereas in the past people would donate items to a charity shop, now quite a number are sold on eBay, so less items getting donated.

Don't know about them. There are too many charity shops though, and they are finding it difficult to make money. One of the problems is a lack of volunteers. They are bringing in more and more paid help. There is also pressure on rents in many areas.

Cancer Research shops tend to have a lot of new giftware in them these days. This then undercuts other giftware shops in the high street. I assume they find this more profitable than second hand. But on the other hand there are about 5 other charity shops within 200yds of them in our town, and a new one is due to open in a couple of weeks.
