Barclays Online: advert added (Rant)

Nov 28, 2005 7 Replies

I've been using Barclays Online this morning. I've just noticed an advert seems to have been added on the "At a Glance" screen ('50 free online trades'). I don't want the advert, I dislike it, I didn't ask for it, they don't put adverts on bank statements so shouldn't drop them into the online service, it's another graphic to download. Since they've put the advert at the top of the screen, you have to scroll down to see all the information that used to be available at the top of the page (hardly 'At a glance' any more!). The Barclays online banking service used to be half-decent: why do they have to interfere...

[Rant=off]

Now, that feels better. At least if someone capable in Barclays sees this posting, they might take some notice, rather than the droid that might reply to the e-mail I sent to Barclays 'Contact' with their usual anodyne reply.

Predictably:

"Please be assured that all customer comments are passed to our Project Development Team who are currently working on improvements to be included in the next and future upgrades to our Internet site. Many of these improvements will be as a result of customer feedback."

blah-blah-blah...

I haven't seen an advert for "free trades", plenty for Baclaycard Platinum, Barclays House Insurance etc. I could have sworn that these in-house adverts have been a part of the site for ages, or am I wrong?

I think you are wrong, and these ads are new, its on the 'at a glance page'. I will be contacting Barclays as well. However, it can also be removed (and I have just removed it) via the Firefox adblocker extension. Result!

You do get adverts with (if not on) your bank statement, loads of them every time I open the envelope.

Umm... I don't get any ads with my statement (that are annoying enough to get noticed).

They've had adverts on the front page, but no the "at a glance" page, IIRC. I do have an ad blocker as part of my firewall (which is usually fairly efficient) but it doesn't block the advert on the "at a glance" page.

Shows how much notice I take. I must be conditioned to ignore things like this, they don't bother me at all. It's the same with DOGS on digital channels, people complain like hell but I never even notice they are there.
