Has anyone seen this story at the Telegraph?
Executive summary:
They call it a "Citizen's Pension", but it's for women. It will cost £5-10 *BILLION*, and guess who will pay... That's right, mainly men. It is supposedly to make things "fair" for women who *chose* to "take time out" to have children.
My opinion:
This makes my blood boil. No woman today has to have a child - it is a free choice, and they are already being subsidised by their husbands, or by the taxpayers if they are so-called "single mothers". And you can bet that the married ones will continue to demand a share of their husband's pension when he dies, or when they divorce, so this is just more money for women.
I hear you say that there will be men who benefit. Yes, but men will be paying most of the cost, through increased taxes. They will have to work harder, for longer, to pay the increased tax burden, so they will be worked into an even earlier grave than now. Remember that men already enjoy less benefit from their pensions than women, because they retire later and die sooner, and this Citizen's Pension will just make things worse.
The other problem is that this Citizen's Pension will do nothing to encourage savings. It sends a specific message about saving for retirement, and a more diffuse message about saving in general. I've heard it said that 80% of consumer spending in the US is done by women, and if that applies to the UK as well, then the Citizen's Pension will just be funding women's profligate spending.
I don't care to fund this sort of thing, thanks.
