What makes you think you'd get a better deal going direct? The annuity provider keeps the commission!

Can you not use an "execution only" agent for annuities, like you can for unit trusts, ISA's etc, with them refunding most of the commission?

You could. That assumes you know what type of annuity you want and which provider to use. i.e. no advice. Anyway he wouldn't get much commission on an annuity. About 1/3rd that for a unit trust.

IIRC, commission was about 1% - but the fund values can be high.

And is taking an annuity a good option at the moment?
