best time to buy 4K car: now or after Xmas?

When would be the best time to buy a secondhand car, bearing in mind:

(a) the usual annual variation in the car market (b) the current economic problems

It would be something like a Ford Focus for about 4,000 and I would not need a loan.

Before Xmas or after? (November or January?)

If you don't need it until after Christmas, you probably don't need it at all.

Towards the end of December. They want to meet their sales targets for the quarter.

I bought the car before last on Christmas Eve, and got it reduced from £4000 to £3000. I ordered about a week before Christmas, and picked it up on

24th.

Perhaps he has an old car which is on its last legs and he recons he can get another 2 months or so out of it?

Makes little difference at the moment. Usually when a new facelift model has been released or in the weeks up to it.

Depending on the company year end, but the week between Christmas and New Year could be a good opportunity.

You are probably better to wait until a new facelift is released.

For example if there is a new Renault Laguna due for release in the next few weeks then yo are likely to get one of the old models worth say 10K for about 7K.

Do this in the New Year, as companies will be falling over themselves with 'crazy deals' for credit-worthy punters.

Where did he say he needed one? Do you only ever buy if there is need?

He wants value. To get it, he's prepared to wait. The longer he waits, the better value he'll get. The very best value is if he doesn't buy at all. That way, he suffers no depreciation to which all cars are prone.

In a normal year, the auctions tend to hit a low in late Nov/early December - dealers tend to stop buying around then as they don't want to buy cars to keep in stock until January, when things pick up again.

But this year ... who knows!

But he may have to pay more repair costs on his existing wreck.
