Council Tax & Property ownership

If I as, being a non-UK resident, purchase a property in the UK, and then let it out, does the tennant have to pay council Tax ? (Which I understood was related to property value) ?

Extending the above question a bit further, if a local UK resident sets up an offshore company that purchases a house, and lets it out back to them, do they have to pay council tax ... which is in the main completely unfair for OAP's etc.

Council tax is always the responsibility of the *occupier*, unless it's unlet in which case the landlord is responsible.

Not quite sure why council tax is unfair on OAPs as they are often far wealthier than normal working people!

AFAIK, The occupier is liable for the council tax, or the owner if it is empty.

Fair or not is academic - you need to speak to your MP about these concerns, but dont expect anything other than well spun bollocks in reply, and nothing whatsoever done about them.

ok,

I'll ask you. Why should there be tax on something such as a property ?

Earnings is fine enough, but what happens if you've just found yourself in a position where the house you're living in is deemed more valuable... what do you do, sell it ? Completely stupid way of taxation.. You may as well Tax people based upon their total wealth: cars, jewellry, bicycles, computers, etc... just that houses seem to be more easily identifyable...

Why not introduce a national tax, and a local tax based on current earnings, without a cap.

Why not indeed? If this was a popular demand, the Liberal Democrats will win the election - you can do your bit by voting for them if you feel strongly.

Me - I'm going to vote tactically to get the current lying, spinning, deceiving bastards out.

Hopefully there will be a small Conservative majority, or no clear majority, so that they dont have the swingeing power that Tony and his cronies have had for the past 8 years, and which makes it clear that if they dont perform for the people, they will be given the boot at the next election..
