Credit card - is no Pin or Signature on "normal" CC slip required allowed???

Dear all:

Used my credit card (NatWest MasterCard) yesterday to buy a new bog seat (Mother-in-Law coming to stay... ) from a local Plumbers merchant.. Credit card is Chip 'n Pin that I've been using as-far-as-I-can-tell happily for a few months

Was surprised to find no PIN was required, although I was asked to sign a separate document (not the normal credit-card slip..., the whole invoice/customer order stuff... which to be fair does note the credit card, though regrettably I notice all the numbers).

I called NatWest and got "Tracey" (yes, really..) who giggled and said she assumed it was OK. Stone me, can't they move the call-centre to the East where we get intelligent people who can think??

What do the assembled NG brains think???

Does anyone know where the "rules" for how these things should work are??

Yours aye

Rab Bonnie Scotland

5 miles from Ben Nevis (that restricts to a very small number the possible merchants....) Bog seat looks lovely:

I dont understand your problem. It all seems fine to me even though I am south of the border.

This may have been processed as a 'Cardholder Not Present' transaction. Did you give you address details to the retailer?

The transaction is perfectly safe.

In cases where you sign, the merchant usually takes liability for a fraudulant card use.

The difference between chip and pin , and signing, is merely a case of whether the merchant or the card company takes liability for fraud - it has little effect on the consumer.

Any chance of a link to a photo - then we will see what the assembled NG brains think :-)
