Housing benefit and backdating - question.

I'm just wondering about one of the sections in the housing benefit form where is asks if you wish to backdate - i.e. claim for an earlier period.

It asks if your circumstances are the same, and if so, asks why you did not claim before.

I am wondering what kind of reasons would be considered valid?

Thanks.

Because you were unaware of your circumstances, been ill, thought your circumstances might change.

Would these excuses actually work? I would assume the HB people would do everything in their power to prevent a claim?

And would they pay the entire rent if to a private landlord? What if it was say £700 per month?

no they wouldn't. It is not their job to get out of payments.

If the reason was good enough they will backdate rent. Paymenst made will depend on eligibility, age, income, number if children, house size ect.

Will that be allowed from next April? :-(

why not ? Benefits are calculated depending on age of claimants and their children.

"In November 2000 the UK Government committed to the EU Employment Directive (Article 13) which means it must introduce age discrimination legislation by December 2006. This means that the UK will have fully comprehensive age discrimination legislation for the first time. This legislation will have the same weight as legislation on gender, race and disability."

This should be interesting. At the moment there are many below market price flats going in blocks built along the south coast in the 1980s that are subject to age restrictions in their leasehold agreements. Usually there's a clause in the lease saying that the flat cannot be owned by people under the age of 65. Arun District Council has dozens them on its patch between Pagham and Elmer because the area is absolutely flat and the esplanade is an ideal route for crumbles to useg their electric velocipedes for their twon shopping trips.

The reason was originally introduced as a cunning stunt by developers to persuade local authorities to give planning consent for more dwellings than there were parking spaces, saying that crumblies were less likely to have cars anyway.

These properties are still going cheap; Estate agents in Bognor usually place a strap across their window pics saying in effect, crumblies only. I think it's a jolly wheeze, giving last time buyers a chance to own otherwise expensive flats.

Yes.

If the level of HB granted covered this amount, then yes.
