Housing benefit and backdating.

Jul 21, 2005 6 Replies

My brother is applying for housing benefit for the first time. Section

17 of the form is about "backdating" and you have to give a reason why you did not claim earlier. His "reason" is that he assumed he would gain new employment more quickly after being made redundant. I can't see that working (he want to claim for the rent earlier this month toa private landlord).

Am I right or is he...and would be be a viable reason since his circumstances were the same (this is what the form asks)?

Thanks.

how much time has passed, if just one month then this would probably be ok. If six months then possibly not.

I believe he only wishes to claim for the rent paid earlier this month.

Then there should be no problem.

a few weeks delay for the application is not going to be an issue.

I appreciate what you are saying. All I am asking is do you speak from personal experience or as someone who is involved in these matters?
