Different VAT numbers

If I run 2 business, John Smith trading as XYZ and John Smith trading as ABC, do you:

  1. Need 2 VAT numbers?

  1. Can have 2 VAT numbers?

Are there any disadvantages to having 2?

No

Usually.

You have to fill in two VAT returns.

VAT registrations cover all the activities of an entity. If you really mean John Smith, one person (entity) with two separate UK businesses, then only one registration is possible and it covers all the business activities of John Smith.

[in anticipation of quibbles, I know about group registrations and divisional registrations but they don't seem to be relevant here]

In what way?

However I believe that Ltd. companies can of course be VAT registered as they are separate entities. So if John Smith set up a Ltd. company called John Smith Ltd. then that will (must?) have a separate VAT registration.
