I was surprised to see that Dr. Shipman (the Manchester mass murderer) had lost his pension becauseof his criminal conviction. I was under the (obviously naive) impression that a pension was something you paid for during your working life and it could not be taken from you. Clearly I was wrong.
Dr. Shipman's criminal activity must top the bill as far as UK criminal history goes. His was a case apart but is it possible to lose your pension for lesser offences?
Suppose a school teacher nearing retirment is convicted of child sex abuse -- is he or she liable to lose their pension? Will any public servant convicted of a relatively minor offence risk losing his pension? What about a judge? Where do they draw the line?
What happens if someone already receiving their pension does something naughty?
It seems ridiculous that someone has to commit suicide so that their dependent(s) will receive a pension.
