Faxing copies of cc and driving licence

Hello

I just tried to buy some webspace online from a UK based company using a debit card. I received an email saying that my order had been placed on hold and asking me to fax through a copy of both sides of the card together with a copy of my driving licence.

I'm not at all happy about having copies of my card and licence floating around god knows where. Is this normal practice - has anyone else come across it?

Thanks Jeff

What is the name of the company?

I think it would be unfair to name them.

It's a scam - they should be named

My website host certainly didn't require that.

It's one of the recommended procedures if the transaction is flagged as potentially fraudulent. Although it's fairly rare for it ever to be used - more often, the transaction is simply declined.

Sounds wrong. So wrong.

Just a quick update.

I told the hosting company I was not prepared to fax copies of card and licence and they went ahead with the transaction anyway. Perhaps the fact that I responded at all was suffcent to allay their worries.

Thanks Jeff
