Housing Benefit

Can anyone give me, or point me at a website, information on Housing Benefit? Does it still exist these days!?

In particular this is in regard to a low earner/pensioner who rents private accomodation. If Housing Benefit does still exist, is this council dependent? I am enquiring for someone who may be in this situation in Scotland.

Additionally, what is the story if the pensioners offspring buy a property and then rent it to their mother. Does this change anything in regard to benefit?

Indeed.

First one on the list is dwp.gov.uk which is probably as good a place as any to start. Your local council's website will probably also have something.

It is paid by the local council, but the rules are the same everywhere.

Yes. They wouldn't be entitled to it.

You could try a web calculator like

to see if she'd be entitled (the rules are the same country wide so it doesn't matter if you're not in Chester). There are rules about renting from family members, like with children the government will happily subside strangers to look after them, but not family. If you want more info post on uk.gov.social-security, there are some housing benefit experts there.

Thanks to Jonathan and Andy Pandy. Exactly what I was looking for.
