How to create money (from what is to stop Gordon Brown printing money)

I was lectured by a self appointed economics expert, that I could not comment, because I talked about governments creating money using the short- hand "printing money."

If you'd really like to know, governments can create money in all sorts of ways, including printing it, but they usually create money by selling bonds to their own central banks, the Bank of England in the case of the UK.
