hypothetical question: if I earned £20k a year, what mortgage could I get

Aug 25, 2006 7 Replies

If I lived in central London, with a good clean credit history and a stable job, but with a poxy salary £10.70 per hour - minimum 37 hours per week, sometimes up to 41 hours... etc. etc. working in central government

I am guessing any bank would laugh in my face. Plus I could never afford anything in London, where I wouldn't get stabbed instantly.

So, do I have a hope in hell? Should I just carry on renting.... forever?

You could borrow somewhere between £70,000 and £100,000 subject to having the appropriate deposit.

In otherwords, carry on renting.

10.70 isn`t exactly poxy, it`s possible to live nice and comfortably on that money - I`m doing it on something similar now. but then again, i`m nowhere near the hell-hole that is London :-)

Try to catch the head of finance and the tarty piece from Personnel busily pawing at each others sexual organs while their underwear is down around their ankles and blackmail the rich philandering bastard for

250K.

I would.

Arthur

One lender would go up to 190K on a full status mortgage, but could you manage an 800 mortgage payment per month.....

Or £1600 / month if interest rates return to 10%.

House prices are expected to half over the next couple of years. Just save now, wait about a bit and pick up a repossesed house for cheap.

Expected by who - I`d love to see the source for your statement.

I wish that was true (is it?)

I would have to save up for ever on my poxy salary!
