ICICI

I'm looking for somewhere to put some instant access savings, and

says that ICICI offers the best rate. Their website says "ICICI Bank UK PLC is a FSA regulated Bank and a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme established under the Financial Services and Market Act 2000." A usenet search suggests that everyone talking about them has an Indian name. Is this a sound place to put money, or some sort of BCCI rerun?

I have had an account with them for over a year...won't bore you with the details but i transferred money into my hisave account...and it never left my current account....that transfer took place last year in january...and ime still 25k better off than i should be! decide for yourself.... but when I realised that they didnt know and were not interested when I sent them secure emails telling them of the error I gradually removed most of my assets. I am now about 8k overdrawn.... but it still shows 17k balance!

We are just in the process of opening a Hisave joint account with them and have now got to send in proof of ID and address. We checked

and they appear ok but I have to feel somewhat apprehensive given they are an Indian bank and only recently in the UK. There again is any bank stable at the moment ? That is why we are diversifying our cash deposits and trying to steer clear of linked banks eg BOS, Halifax, Birmingham Midshires, Saga, The AA where they are only classed as one institution under FSA registration.

Well they are FSA regulated (go to the FSA website to check). I recently joined up after investigating though limited the amount to <

2k until last week with the government now guaranteeing 35k.

I've had no problems thus far (though I haven't tried to get money out).

One tip I picked up though and that is to "push" the money into the account (using their bank sort code and your account number) rather than pull it in. Apparently they take a while to set up your first "pull" and then it is supposed to work reasonably well so in any event I set up a 10 transfer that way just to kick it off but my main transfers have been made from my linked current account.

Perhaps I ought to do a small transfer out of the account to check it works :)

Why? It's a standard BACS DD request - it takes 3 working days from my account. During this time the money's still in your linked account and earning interest. If you do your own 'push' transfer then it takes just the same time, but you lose a couple of days' interest as the money is in transit. I appreciate that a couple of days' interest may not be worth much on £10 but on larger amounts it can all add up.

It does.

They've been here for 2 years.

Sorry - I misled myself by the fact they only signed up to the banking code in October 2007.

I was under the impression that the first one can take a while (I had assumed some manual procedure may be involved). I haven't timed a recent one.

Ah, my linked account is a current account (no interest). I hadn't thought of linking an on-line savings account. Would that work?

GPWM subject to my earlier comment.

Reassuring to know.

They do say something like 10 days, yes. IIRC, and it was 18 months ago, it actually took 4 days.

You should switch. My linked account is also a current account, with just under 5% interest. You can get up to 8% with Abbey.

Unlikely - they don't normally accept DDs.
