I sent my cheque off on 12th July and it cleared my account on 20th July BUT I'm still waiting for ICICI to mail me with my account details.

They don't seem to want any customers. It's an Indian bank acting like a bunch of cowboys!

They might be, but they seem to have some sort of co-operation with Lloyds TSB, see

I've sent 2 cheques to them, both cashed and one acknowledged. Apparently my account has been opened but this is academic as they've not sent a PIN to my address - could be anywhere now!

More concerning than the Cowboys and Indians theme is their web-s**te (icicibank.co.uk) in the 'charges' section states:

"MISCELLANEOUS: Cash withdrawals in excess of £2000 - 2%" Wow - 2% whenever you withdraw your own money is impressive.

Follow-up to my original posting

It now 19th August and I'm still waiting! They have had my money for a month now! They don't reply to emails either - 7 days and still waiting for their reply to my question about what has happened to my account.

I will be closing that account as soon as they send me the account details. I assume that the money will be earning 5%+ interest during this time.

On this experience, ICICI bank is not one to be recommended - 5 weeks to (NOT) open an account and zero customer service..

I sent my cheque in and it was cashed within a week of my application....my details with PIN were posted to me within another week. The only problem I have is that I initiated a transfer to them on sunday

14th and as of today 19th its still not in thier account, however the sender account still has the funds in it. Re the 2000 cash limit without charges.... if you want cash you have a current account, one would expect to use an online account to stash the cash.....and if you need some more do an electronic transfer back to your current account then remove the cash from there surely?

Yes obviously - but this is not addressing the 2% fee issue. Not mentioned in their terms & conditions. ING direct and Nationwide offer high e-savings rates without charging a fee to access my own money.

Consider the account closed (if they bother replying) - but, hey, good luck accessing your money when you want it.

If this charge for transferring money is not mentioned in their terms and conditions or rates and charges then you should report them to the FSA surely?

With ING and Nationwide Esavings you cannot take cash directly out those accounts anyway - you have to transfer to a current account. Online banking at ICICI is free - just like ING and NW. Compare like with like.

Online banking with ICICI is impossible because they fail to tell customer their account numbers and pins and they fail to respond to email. Another two weeks passes and still nothing back from ICICI (6 weeks and counting)

I had a fairly swift email response to a problem with my login to their online banking site - telling me to call a london number (020 70.... something) which has been constantly engaged (4 days and counting - I'm getting bored) Icici - customer service? I don't think so!

Their web site gives another 37 phone numbers you can try - all in India!

They proudly boast "No matter where you are you can always reach us"

Their site goes on to say Once we receive your cheque, we will open your account, bank your cheque, and send across your Login ID and account information by e-mail within seven working days. For security purposes, your password will be posted at your residential address separately.

It's now been around 40 working days without the email promised nor the snail mail information!

It was unusual that this bank got promoted on BBC Money Box when launched.

I know almost all posts to this ng about any bank is negative, but has anyone had *success* with them? I presume it was an overwhelming number of applications that bogged them down, but you'd expect that to have cleared by now.

Putrid poetry, dismal doggerel, extrava-stanzas...

Application received by them on 31/7 request for my initial deposit cheque 2/8 full acceptance and login details supplied via email and deposit of my cheque 9/8 receipt of password ...about 14/8 transfer of initial wad 15/8 receipt in HiSave account 8 days later (delays for initial transfer..probably for security checks)

I hear all the problems people are having but in all honesty I did not!

I'm glad that they are still in business :(

While I can understand mistakes do get made I find it unacceptable that they fail to respond to any communication with them via email. They are getting the emails I'm sending and because Message Disposition Notifications are being returned automatically by their servers.

Researching their operation in other countries now shows that that they operate with zero customer service. You probably will be okay until something goes wrong - and then you are likely to hit the same wall of silence.

They set my account up eventually but now I cannot withdraw money. When I emailed to ask hot ot do this I was told customer service would deal with it. Customer service rang my home number while I was at work and left a message for me to call back on a certain number. I did and they have not returned my call.

I was thinking of putting 90k in there but needless to say I won't be doing so now....

Update: today I received a reply from their customer service department.

Unfortunately it contained a standardised reply and a list of questions most of which had answers in my email to which they were replying. They even want to know the name and contact details of the ICICI Sales Executive that I was dealing with!

One American ICICI customer has suggested "treat them if they are little children and repeatedly answer all the questions they ask". I have done so :)

I await to see if ICICI bank will actually give me my account details so that I can withdraw my money.

Update 2 One day later and I've got an apology from ICICI and my account details. I have been promised that my password will be posted to me shortly.

So...summarising everything from my perpective Icici has not failed with automated communications, login details, passwords, transfers from my current account...and finally as of today successful and speedy transfer back to my current account. Satisfactory and successful in entirety for me!

Well, that's encouraging; perhaps they are starting to get it together. They have been slow and unresponsive for me, but others have had it a lot worse.
