Import Tent from USA - tax implications

Jan 25, 2007 4 Replies

Looking to have a friend purchase a tent in the USA ($360 v UK price of £290) and ship it over as a gift to me in the UK.

Just wondering what the situation is regarding VAT and import tax etc - has any tried this and are tents VAT rated?

TIA

Alan

Yes VAT is charged on tents, probably import duty of a few %, and the shipping will cost maybe up to £80.

In fact VAT is charged on the goods, plus the shipping cost, plus the import duty.

You might be better paying the UK cost and getting a UK warrranty. :(

If it's not exempt through being a gift, then $360 x 3% x 17.5% + tax admin fee -

Hm

Guess I had better pick it up at the airport on my way through to the campsite then and after 10 days use it should pass muster as used on the way back into the UK (hidden in my backpack).

Just make sure you post the receipts back to yourself whilst over there.
