"Information rights" for shareholders in nominees

Does anyone have any experience of "information rights" for shareholders in nominees. How does it work (if it's set up at all yet?)? Do you get the information direct from the company, or via the broker? Which brokers offer this (many brokers will forward on e.g. annual reports but it's not always timely or reliable), and I suspect that's not quite the same thing.
