ING Direct / good interest rate?

Anyone have any experience of banking with ING Direct, as they seem to be offering a competative interest rate of 4.3% at the moment.

(I recently signed up with Citibank who also was offering a good rate, however, I guess they must have snared enough new customers, and have now chopped it down to 3.5%).

Yes, no problem as a savings account but not really a current account. No cheque book or bill payments and you have to transfer money to and from your account via one dedicated current account.

The bank themselves are useless - They failed to open my account - I had to send off three application forms before they set it up. They also returned my initial cheque by mistake (twice) and asked me to send it to them again!

Now, they refuse to send me postal statements - even though I specifically asked for these. - The last person I spoke to ended up saying to me 'What do you expect me to do about it'.

I would rate them even lower than Cahoot for customer service, but I suppose if you manage to get your account open, and operate it completely online yourself (and don't need their assistance) you may be OK.

I can't say I've had a problem with them. My account setup was relatively straightforwad and so far haven't had a problem.

Admittedly they do keep you on hold for a long time, but other than that I think they're ok for an online bank.

ING is a paired to the bone internet-only savings deal - no outlets and probably run with a skeleton staff - hardly a bank. Money can only be moved to and from your single current account which should make it fairly safe. Once the account's been set up (do it with £1) it should be plain sailing.

I thought u could link a ING Direct Savings account to UK 2 Current accounts (which accepts Direct Debit and BACS transfer). I phoned to apply to link in to an additional account anyway? Although I had to send in a cheque to "validate" the authenticity of the info I was given. Would probably be just quicker to write them a letter instead.

probably run with

You're probably right about that - having simplified my arrangements now i've only the one current account and it does as you say accept direct debit. If BACS is the same-day electronic transfer - i always get that confused with CHAPS - then you can certainly pay money into ING that way but alas not out of the account.

BACS isn't the same-day electronic transfer. BACS is the slow way, which takes 3 days and is usually free.

CHAPS payments are same-day, but you'll usually be charged a fee to use the service.
