If I transferred money online, to an account that did not exist, though the sort code would be valid, what would happen?

Yes, that should be the case - a client did that a few months back.

Unless by sheer chance the sort code and account number did exist - payment would then go into that account. As online transactions are done electronically only ones over a certain amount would be checked to see if name and account number matched. Eric

I seem to remember reading that the account numbers, when allocated to new customers are incremented by 13 each time so that it reduces the chance of a payment going into someone else's account if one digit is miskeyed.

Theres a checksum based on the sort code and account number, you can test sort code/account combinations yourself at
