You don't count the pence!
You can get around 10% (taxfree if in an ISA) with some corporate bond funds - if you don't mind the risk. Arguably much of the risk has been sold out now, anyway. I'm not sure why people are leaving their money in banks to the extent that they are.

And if you don't want the risk? I've seen 2.2% I think Seems better than the 0.1% that a huge number of "savings" accounts have. I think the guy from MSE calls them "losing" accounts now.
