Is Switch / Solo being phased out?

In an effort to manage my finances better, I've just opened a second bank account with the Halifax. For some reason I've received a Visa electron card instead of the expected solo debit card.

I've rung the bank enquiring why they've issued me with a card that is accepted at very few retailers in preference to the solo ~ they told me that all banks were changing to the electron system in the next year in line with chip & pin & that solo & switch were being phased out. When pressed, they said that it was not their problem that retailers didn't have the facility to take the card!

This sounds like Haliax BS to me & means that I'm going to move my accounts away from them.

Yes, Switch is being phased out but its only a rebranding exercise as they are replacing Switch with Meastro. However, Halifax and Bank of Scotland aren't changing.

It's being phased out by Halifax/BOS, but other banks such as Natwest/RBS and HSBC are staying with them.

AFAIK if a retailer accepts Solo they will usually accept Electron.

Solo card rules allow manual PAN entry, Electron rules do not.
