Laundering? No, officer!!!

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to send money to my Wife in Greece for rent on a property on a monthly basis without a massive charge!

CAN'T send a cheque in sterling. CAN'T transfer money from a sterling account to a Euro account. CAN'T send cash, (either currency) registered post- prohibited to Greece. Western Union etc...- WAY too big a charge.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Could i send money from my British account,(it has an IBAN number) to a Greek account,(Euros) which has an IBAN number? Would there be a charge for this?

Can i open up a Euro account with a bank in this country? Then make a transfer? Would the charge be high? Could i get a cheque book with such an account & just mail a cheque? If this hypothetical Euro account had an IBAN number, could i transfer that way without a hideous charge?

ANY help will be MUCH appreciated!!!!! Thank you.

To minimise charges, minimise the payment frequency. Send 3 times the monthly amount every 3 months.

Yes and yes. Probably of the order of 2 quid a time, possibly at each end.

Probably, but there may be standing charges. It will be cheaper to transfer money from a UK Euro account to a Greek Euro account, but don't forget you'd still have to feed the UK Euro account from your UK sterling account, and that will involve charges.

I doubt that would save anything.

Not if you regard *any* charge as "hideous". See above. Two quid a throw. Not too bad if you only do it quarterly instead of monthly.

How about something like Paypal? You load the money in, send it to her, and she draws it down to her bank?

Lots of sympathy. I tried to take a car there and got the strong impression that they are only members of the community when it suits them. I loved the Greek people but dreaded doing business there.

Nationwide might do it by post, but the ridiculous money laundering rules will no doubt prevent that somehow.
