Paying for Flights

**cross posted to UK legal**

My son and a couple of his friends want to go to Holland next month, but none of them have a credit card, and they have asked me to help them book flights and accommodation over the Internet for which they will pay me and I will use my credit card.

I have no problem with this, they have just moved into their first home and don't want the temptation of a credit card to deflect them from the all important mortgage payments, but I did wonder if I am likely to hit any snags? E.G. will the fact that the credit card being used is not linked to any of the names of the 3 people traveling cause a glitch?

Thanks for any advise.

Depends on the check-in procedure.

With Easyjet and Ryanair, I've only ever been asked for the booking ref. and a valid photo ID; with BA OTOH, I had some difficulty checking in last year on a BHX-CDG as I didn't have the credit card with me that I had paid with.

Also, if your son et al want to use automated check-in, it's almost

100% sure they will need to take the card used for payment. (Of course, depending on how far you trust him, you could just give him the card to take with him...)

You should have no problem but your son will have to take your card with him along with a covering letter saying that you authorise him to use it. I've done this before with flights under a company card. Also you should send all booking details to your address to avoid any problems with security checks.

As others have pointed out the person collecting the ticket or checking in may be asked to produce the card. However I quite often use a card for payment which does not match the name on my booking or passport - and not once have I been asked to produce the actual payment card. In fact I doubt the check-in staff have access to the payment details (card number etc.).

Best bet would be for you to write a letter which indicates you paid for the ticket for your Son and have him show it if asked about the payment. Don't get him to hand it over in the first instance as that is asking for trouble.
