Pension problem.

I have several pensions with a pension provider. For many years I have kept track of them via their web site. A couple of years ago one of the pensions, from a company I left in 1994, stopped being accessible on line and I had to phone the pension provider for the updates but now when I phone they tell me that as it is a 'Trustee Scheme' they cannot give me that information and to contact the trustees representative.

They gave me the name of the IFA who they say is managing the scheme but I have been unable to contact them either by post or phone*, I have been trying since the beginning of March. Direct contact is difficult as we are at opposite ends of the country.

Of note is the fact that the pension provider tell me that they have been sending annual statements to that address for forwarding to me and whilst I have always received annual statements for their other pensions, I have never received any statements for this one from the IFA. (Though I have just now received a copy of the 2009 one from another source.)

Do I have a major problem here and can you recommend what action I should now take?

  • No reply to post and phone goes direct to a BT answer phone.

TIA

You could try the Pension Tracing Service to see if you get new contact details:-

Firstly, look up the IFA on the FSA website and see if they are still in business.

If they are still authorised there will be a contact number (which may be the same as you have already tried). If they are no longer in existence the trustees of the scheme should tell you who is handling the pension now.

I don't believe you have a problem other than that of contact and information. You start your second para with the word 'they'. The context does not tell me who 'they' are - either the trustees or the pension provider. So someone is telling you to contact the IFA. This is the best bet and there must be an IFA somewhere who's now doing it.

Thank you both for the information -

The 'FSA Gov' site confirmed that the firm is "Currently Authorised", it gave the same phone number as I have but added email and Fax. I will try a couple more times, if there is no response I will speak to the pension provider.

The pension provider says that they were, "unable to locate the Trustees of the ... scheme", they could only tell me the IFA, (who they have been sending the annual statements to).

Yes, it was the pension provider.

Thanks again. I will report back with a new post if I get anywhere... or not!

Isn't the IFA just someone who dealt with Slatts affairs at some point ? If Slatts so longer has a relationship with them then it might be worth getting a copy of everything they have received and getting it sent direct instead.

The trustees are the people who have the legal duty to administer the pension, which is presumably why the company, reasonably, redirected your request.

The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) are the experts -

This may well be so. But many pension providers will not deal direct with the public (and that includes pension trustees) because the public will need advice from time to time and most providers do not have people authorised to give advice.

Ahem - if the contract is between the pension provider and "the public (and that includes pension trustees)", then they will have to deal direct with them if requested.

So, when requested for info they provide info *only*; when requested for advice, they refuse and send them elsewhere. Simple, innit?!
