In order to sell more houses just reduce the prices. I'm not surprised there are few first time buyers in the South East (I doubt the problem is a national one). A recent TV program said that the average income in Chelsea, the most expensive place in the country to live, was 40k. This salary would get you a mortgage for a studio flat in a rough block nearby, or a 4 bedroomed semi in Leeds.

It seems silly that estate agents should be pleading poverty and begging for government help, but the approach has worked for other industries! Look how much miners ended up getting paid before they got too greedy and it all went pear shaped.

That's just silly. Reduce interest rates and let buyers up their leverage.

It's not estate agents pleading poverty, its the NAEA. I would guess that they have to be seen to justifying their existence, and this is one thing they can add to the list of things they have tried.

I could also guess that a question was asked like "how could the current property market be sustained?", and an answer was given and then spun.

The fact is that the market regulates itself. Prices get too high, first time buyers cant buy, prices stabilise, or fall, until the next time.

The article was about estate agents grumbling that they wanted government help to sell more houses. It is not within the power of estate agents to change interest rates.

I see the point, but I would expect a reduction in interest rates to increase demand and also prices.
