re mortgage on low income

I lost my job (redundant but a measly redundancy payment) and am now in a low paid job earning a third of what I was before but still managing to keep paying the bills. I thought I would get a re mortgage to cut down my monthly payments but when I entered all my details truthfully into a mortgage site I did not even get one offer. Went through the same process and put my income as what I was getting before I became unemployed and I got loads of offers. So how can someone who is now earning 6500 a year now, as against 21000 three years ago, get a 46000 mortgage? I only have 6 years before the underperforming endowments start to mature and am finding it a struggle to pay the 350 per month for the endowments and the mortgage, but managing with a little help from my wife's part time wages. However she wants to retire in a year and a half when she reaches 60 (no chance says I) so I was hoping to reduce any payments before then. At least we will save 10 a week on petrol and bus fares for her. Annoying thing is I will reach 60 before her but I have to work till I am

  1. Is there a site that lists all the freebies etc that can be claimed by an over 60? I know I will get free bus travel but the bus is not convenient for my work. It is for my wifes' work but she wont be going there when she reaches 60.

So any suggestions or will we just have to tighten our belts a little more for the next 6 years?

7 times earnings ? You can't. Even if you could they'd probably consider you a high risk and offer a crap interest rate. It's probably worth double checking with a financial advisor.

Considered selling the endowments ? If the endowment is linked to the mortgage ie the mortgage company won't let you sell it without their permission you may have difficulty.

See an *independent* financial advisor to review the whole situation.

Claim any/all the benefits that you can - book a meeting at the benefits office. They've taken your NI contributions for ~40 years, sounds like it's payback time.

There is an excellent forum for debt issues here - - TMF dealing With Debt board. They give lots of advice on how to make ends meet.
