Require alternative to Cahoot credit card - info please!

Dec 09, 2003 31 Replies

I'm looking for some info and advice on finding a credit card company.

I particularly like idea of the Cahoot credit card because Cahoot has a facility which allows you to generate a "one-time" unique credit card number which Cahoot will honour for a single transaction only on your account.

This would be really useful when buying something from the Net or when buying over the phone from a supplier whom you feel might be a bit risky.

Does anyone know of any other UK credit card companies offering a similar sort of feature?

Thanks for any info. Vance

PS - I can't use Cahoot because they had some bad technical problems when they set up an account for me.

Why would you buy anything from a supplier you think is risky?. I buy everything off the internet using a normal credit card which protects me against fraud.

Capital One say they have "No internet fraud liability" on their cards.

Having no liability is a great comfort, of course. Never having to get into the situation in which your CC is compromised is a much, much bigger comfort. I use my Cahoot webcard when it is possible to do so. No good for contuous debits, of course - otherwise, it is a great idea.

x-no-archive: yes

a prepaid 'credit' card is at

- can only be charged up to balance you have put on it...

Not necessary the supplier being dodgy, but his computer could be hacked into and the information used to make copies of your info. Recently there have been many cases of even the most reputable online vendors falling foul of hackers.

Do you know anyone else other than Cahoot who is offering such a facility?

In my opinion, the hassle involved in phoning your credit card company to report the infraction and then writing to them to ask them to investigate and then finally waiting for them to re-imburse you while you track the missing amount is generally best avoided.

Regardless of which credit card company you are with you can register for MasterCard SecureCode or Verified By Visa (depending on your card type, obviously) to protect your details further by a unique passcode (see

or

for further details)

i believe the amex blue card has a internet guarantee of sorts - not sure on specifics see

just be sure to check out what the credit card's companies liability limits are in the T&Cs

hope that is of some help

This is an interesting point; I have a US credit card (i.e. one that was issued by a US Bank in the USA) and had reason to dispute a car rental charge (450+) made on it. Actually I had already signed the CC slip in this case, but was unhappy when I saw the state of the rental car, but as usual the dodgy UK vendor will not refund me. On arrival back to the USA, I made a toll-free phone call to the CC customer services to lodge a dispute over this charge. The CC company sent me a double sided form to fill in, and when I returned the form to them they immediately refunded this charge to my CC while they investigated this dispute. They later wrote to inform me that they were waiting to hear the vendor's side of the story and reserve the right to recharge my CC with the amount they refunded should they decide to take the vendor's side. That was over 12 years ago - turns that the vendor never returned his form back to the CC company so they never heard his side of the story and couldn't therefore take his side.

I was so impressed with this CC company that to this day I still carry this US CC around with me (in case of any dodgy transaction) despite having returned to the UK for over 10 years. The only down side is it is a bit of a pain to make payments to this CC as I have to pay in USD, so I only reserve it for car rentals and other dodgy looking merchant - okay online merchants then.

Now why can't we get CC company behaving like this in the UK???????????

You can... I have had similar "good" experiences with at least 3 UK card issuers in the past...

Try Sainsbury's Bank (administered by Bank of Scotland) and/or MBNA (was Save & Prosper aka Robert Fleming?) both have provided very good responses to my charge back requests.

Marbles (fscard) on the other hand can't even be contacted!

Who would have thought that Heathrow Express was a risky supplier?

Does anyone other than the Halifax offer Verified by Visa in the UK on their credit cards? Do any UK card offer MasterCard SecureCode?

Regards, Far

I had an expirience of fraud on my CitiBank card. I rang them and told them it was fraud, they sent me an afferdavit, which I signed indicating that I was not lying. They refunded the money onto my card and nothing else was ever said.

Don't forget that all major credit card companies are the same all over the world; Visa, MasterCard, American Express etc, there are slightly different rules in diffrerent countries but the companies themselves are pretty much the same. Of course in America you can loan your credit card to people, you can't do that here.

Best, Ian

I'm afraid that I don't know of any other. Perhaps Cahoot have 'patented' the idea.

I can't see why you don't just sort your problems with Cahoot out :-)

You can't patent business methods in the UK.

Just managed to answer my own question - HSBC now appear to be offering MasterCard SecureCode services on their own Mastercards...

Regards, Far

what, you mean like "Chargeback" ? wow - great idea. You never know, it might just catch on over here.

UK???????????

Actually mine is a CitiCard issued by CitiBank of NY. So it looks like they have more or less the same customer policy over here.

Just to clarify, in my case it wasn't fraud in the strict sense, as I did signed the credit slip. It was only when I walked over to collect the car that I found it unsatisfactory. Of course by then the dodgy car hire firm would not allow me to back out of the contract I just signed a few minutes ago. This merchant clearly thought that I would be left on the spot with a car and a signed charge slip. Little did he know that it was US CC with more than excellent customer service backup.

I think I will go and get myself a UK CitiBank CC to save myself the hassle of making payments in USD to CitiCard.
