I realise that failure to pay will result in a surcharge and interest added.
However if I wish to pay less is it mandatory to inform the tax office this will happen?
Also will it affect my credit rating in any way.

If it's only a week or two I don't see a problem. If it's a matter of months I would phone and discuss it.
