Should I make overpayments on mortgage?

Yes, that's what he meant when asking me whether that was what I meant, which it was, because I was contradicting someone who said overpaying was a bad idea, by saying if that were so then underpaying would be good, the more the better. And you can't underpay any more than by not paying at all.

Well, you can, but only if you borrow more capital.

Do keep up and stop talking rubbish.

Sounds good to me..

I can see how it would sound good to someone with a devil-may-care, après-moi-le-déluge outlook, and no sense of awareness that the piper will want paid.

I thought his comment was based on your phrase "even better not to pay at all, not even interest" meaning that nothing would *ever* be re-paid....

Rather clever post, I thought!

Too clever by half. You're easily amused. The scope of "at all" was of course limited to the monthly horizon, not to all of eternity.

The obligation to repay the total amount owing upon expiry of the term with a pre-arranged duration, remains. The point is, as well you know, that this amount will be a hell of a lot if no payments were ever made during the term, and that overpayments (the earlier the better) reduce the total payable by more than most people think.

Is that the 'interest' half? Or the, ahem, 'c-word' half? ;-)

I didn't notice you mention "monthly horizon" before...

Of course. But if the punter doesn't "pay at all, not even interest", then it sounds like s/he doesn't pay "the total amount owing upon expiry" either.

You're talking rubbish.

I didn't. What of it? Some things are just too obvious to need to point out explicitly.

Agreed, it could. To a complete nincompooop.

Evidently. Let's see if I can go without for 48 hours. Would you care to join me?

Make that 24. No point setting unrealistic targets.

Go without what?

I think I'll stay in the real world. At least the one that has real mortgages.

You are unrealistic about mortgages so why not be unrealistic about everything?
