Smart metering

If smart metering was able to discern the time I used electrical power at various times of the day, would that mean I could legitimately charge my employer for power used during my normal working day if I worked from home?

And pass the "wholly and exclusively" criteria of expense during the course of my work?

For your computer yes

for cooking your lunch no

for heating the house probably not

Only if the power usage would be zero if you were not there - which seems unlikely.

If your employer is English, yes. If Scottish, don't ask or you'll be paying him.
