Multiple files - how to discern/open

Yesterday the accountant was here, and I made a backup file after the visit (an extra, to be safe).

Today, I was downloading CC data from the online banking window and noticed some transactions that I asked QB to add were from LAST YEAR (have no clue why the download was so out of date). So, I undid the (duplicate) entries. As a precaution I wanted to check to make sure the balances were unchanged from yesterday.

I tried to restore yesterdays backup. Had some errors cuz my workstation is not the one set up for multi use. I copied the backup and restored locally.

Here's the thing, I had named the backup file MCOE 06-10-19 and restored to a file of the same name... but the name at the top when QB opened was the name of the company file (seems that the rename for backup only affects what it is called in windows?)

After checking my data, I closed and wanted to open the company file. QB did not bring up the screen to select the file, it brought up the user login. Now, I KNEW the last file I opened was the backup, so I exited and then the select file splash screen came up (with my backup file as the first selection).

Seems it would be pretty simple to muck up and work with the wrong files.

So, I was wondering.. is there any way to set QB to display the path name of the file you are working on? In addition, is there any way to force QB to open with the splash screen asking you to choose the file you want?

Press F2. It's in the "File Information" section.

No preference setting for this that I know of, but I believe if you do a "Close Company" before exiting QB it will display the company selection dialog at startup.

Hi L!

You can see the path name of the file you are working on and previous files by going to :

File ->Open Previous Company

You can also open QuickBooks to the No Company Open screen by holding down the control key while opening QuickBooks.

Good luck!

Personally I prefer the CTRL-1 option to get the full scoop on the data file you have open. It always has bothered me that QuickBooks does not give you the filename on the title bar only the Company Name. One of the first things I always warn my students about.
