Student Accounts

Has anyone got any personal advice or links to comparisons on student accounts?? Also, I heard that one of them offers free currency conversion??

Thanks,

Nick

I used natwest for my duration at Uni - they were excellent (all dealing done via personal advisor at uni branch in nottingham). They have all usual perks like overdrafts etc, and do commission free foreign exchange. DO NOT choose your account according to what they give you when you join up - you'll soon not care if you got 50 instead of 30 when you cant increase your overdraft cos they are really picky !

Funnily enough I had a student bank account from Natwest at Nottingham University. They were good until I moved away. The new branch was awful so I moved to another bank.

If you are going to pick an account based on overdraft facility - look for the interest rates on the overdraft (most are without fees, but still charge monthly interest on the overdrawn balances). Check both the agreed and not agreed rates (as you may find yourself accidentally going over the agreed limit and paying charges plus a higher interest rate).

There will come a point when you ask for money and they say "no". It's not the bank's fault but many people fall out with the bank they use at Uni. and never go back.

I would imagine that you are thinking about a commission free currency conversion. With these offers you still pay because the currency is sold at a higher price than it will be bought.

Good luck.

Nick - there is a very good comparison of student accounts on MSN Money.

There is also a thread discussing this on this website, in the Student Finance forum.
