I saw Country Joe McDonald on YouTube and he seems to be playing in pubs nowadays.
I like guys like Eric Goulden who when he realised that lots of other bands were shadowed by tribute bands decided to form his own!
I wasn't functioning too well unless I really liked the bands.

That's the same thing innit. The best way to "handle the tax angle" is to reduce his existing income (consisting exclusively of savings interest for the time being) to (just) below the level at which he can still truthfully make the required declaration.
Clearly it would be daft to transfer *all* his savings into a gain vehicle since this would leave him nothing to live off. But he could transfer *some* of the savings (and being "on the cusp" means it wouldn't have to be much) to somewhere where the growth counts as gain rather than income.
He lives partly off savings interest and partly off savings capital, of course.
It may not make much odds either way, since if he does eat away at the capital, one year's worth of drawings could be enough to make the "problem" of too much interest go away, so he could just live with the problem of tax being deducted at source during 2007/8, and then complete the IR form for 2008/9 onwards until his pension starts.
