Personal incidental expenses on tax return

Hi,

My employer does not pay me a £5/night personal incidental expenses allowance when I stay away from home on business. Can I claim this on my tax return, so I can get back the tax paid on £5/night? If you can point to the advice on the inland revenue website where this discussed that would be really good.

I did notice that if your employer underpays the mileage allowance then you can claim the tax back on the difference.

Thanks, Dave.

This can be a difficult area. Reasonable subsistence allowances for the extra costs for living away from home may be allowable. Have you spoken to your Tax Office on the subject?

Yes, it would be a good idea to get a reply in writing if they say I can claim 5/night for the UK. I don't want to be stung in a couple of years time. (That's why I was hoping for someone to point out the relevant regulation or advice that I can read for myself.)
