Why on earth do people leave it so late every year...? It may be tedious beyond belief, but if it has to be done it has to be done.
Maybe HMRC should borrow Nike's byline: "Just do it!"
I really can't explain it. Due to my woking abroad the last few years I only have to fill in about 6 boxes and can easily work out which by comparing with last year.
But it still sat on the shelf until yesterday.
(and I'm due for a refund as well)

But why do it at any particular time?
So long as it is done before the deadline, it really doesn't matter just when it is done.
I actually did mine early this year - about a fortnight ago. But only because I thought I might be busy this weekend, since I was only arriving back from a week's skiing yesterday.
You don't like to get a refund in early?
What if the tax payer has problems and needs an accountant? Accountants are inundated around this time of year.
And to make it more fun, most of the staff at HMRC seem to be going on strike on Wednesday too :-)
I have never had enough refund to be bothered about interest. This year was just over £100 refund.
If they are in the situation where that is likely, then that would seem a good reason for doing it early, yes.
Good point!
He probably pays off his credit card a month before he needs to. And writes his Christmas cards in July.
A dubious strategy unless you're pretty sure about being busy. You take a very real risk of having wasted some of your few remaining hours if you happen to get yourself killed on the slopes :)
