Travel Insurance

I've just been buying travel insurance and I had to reject the first few offers because they included a clause that said: "Medical expenses in excess of 500 pounds are not covered unless pre authorised."

How on earth is one expected to get pre-authorisation if you've been knocked down in an accident or are having a heart attack. Was I being too cautious?

I also got annoyed, having read the T&Cs that say "not covered for pre-existing conditions" and thinking that's OK, now that I know what they are they are trivial and self treatable (for a few weeks) I can live with that.

But when I apply there's a question "Have you attended a doctor for treatment in the last 12 months" and if you answer 'yes' you get told "Sorry you cannot buy this insurance online and must phone the call centre", experience tells me that the call centre will insist on charging you more because you aren't getting the online discount (even though they accept that the medical condition is benign). I went back and said 'no'! I guess I'll get pilloried for that! But what percentage of the population haven't been to the doctor in a 12 month period and been given treatment - assuming that a course of medication is "treatment", perhaps it isn't?

No, not pilloried, you just risk getting your claim rejected if they find out.

A huge proportion, I would have thought.

Perhaps the lesson is that when you get mildly ill you should not go to the doctor, or if you do, do so just to get a sick note for your work, if you need one, but *not* for any treatment. Most ailments get better all by themselves anyway, especially if they're hangovers or flu-like infections.
