UK cheques in USA?

I typically give my sons a cheque as a Christmas gift. One of them has recently moved to the USA. Will he be able to pay the Natwest cheque (which I'm about to send with his Christmas card) into whatever account he now has please?

Do you know whether he kept his UK bank account open when he left? There wouldn't have been any need to close it and it would be convenient to retain it for handling any UK transactions like this.

If not, he would probably be able to pay it into his US account, but his bank will most likely charge him a substantial fee for clearing the cheque. Also he could have to wait for up to several weeks before the cleared funds become available.

Almost certainly a U.S. commercial bank will accept your sterling cheque for collection, but the cost to him will be very high. He may pay $50 or more for that service.

You might consider sending the gift via PayPal or, if you can get to one of their UK airport locations, buying and mailing USD American Express travelers cheques.

Paypal is probably your cheapest alternative.

Take a look at the Cash Passport.

Buy the card online, follow instructions, then send it to him, when he acknowledges receipt of same, give him the pin. He will have to use it to draw cash from ATM. You can reload it anytime afterwards. (The exchnge rate is not too brilliant!)

I belong to a scientific society that deliberately choses a treasurer in CYprus because apparently Cyprus banks will accept checks from any country.

Any proper bank should be able to do that, maybe Cyprus banks don't charge the usual high fees for this.

Only just caught up with this, but when I gave money to my daughter in the US I changed the pounds to dollars and sent those, or you could get a dollar cheque from the bank.
