Sending money to another UK bank.

Do banks charge for domestic transfers like they do for international ones? Reason I'm asking is I reckon both the banks would look at me funny if I took a large amount of cash from one bank and tried to pay it to another. Particularly if one account was new.

Go to you online banking (ask for a userbame & password if they have not yet given you one) and go to "bill payments" and do it that way, which should be free.

I use internet banking and I don't pay anything to transfer money to another UK bank. There is a daily limit though. Check with your bank.

I thought of this one. My online bank has a daily limit of how much can be sent, I am not quite sure how much this is as they don't say, but I will check later.

HBOS tried to tell me there was a limit of 5k per day. I did remind them that this was actually my money not theirs which they did not appreciate.

I then found all I had to do was set up more than one transfer mandate. i.e. cahoot1 cahoot 2 etc all with the same bank details. Worked for me I guess their software only picked up on the name of the mandate.

Hope this helps

HBOS didn't like it when we tried to move something like 50k from one account to another in the same online account portfolio which was slightly ridiculas as it was 2 accounts in same single name under the same online account user portfolio, they did eventually reluctantly oblige by calling their helpline particularly when it was pointed out that it was their c*ck-up anyway that had put the money in the incorrect account after they "lost" it for a month after banking the endowment policy cheque from Scottish Widows and not crediting it to the account specified.

Yeah they told me that if you wanted to transfer more they make you do it as a CHAPS payment at 20 which just about sealed what I thought of Barclays, unfortuantely I have to bank with them so that I can present cheques at the account holding branch when I know their is money in the account so they will clear the same day; needless to say I have no intention to let the balance get over 2 for more than 48hrs, let alone 2000 if I can help it.

I admit to not being very polite to them as I am a very long (25 years) term customer of BOS and do not like the HBOS merger. BOS charged large fees but gave very good service (i.e. Overdraft arranged on the phone to the manager) the H part now means I need to log in to 2 different Internet accounts for my personal or business accounts and I have no idea at all where my reputed personal bank manager may be.

Funny though they always panic when I threaten to move my business accounts :-) From talking to BOS staff they seem very unimpressed with the merger, I think Halifax should have stuck to mortgages.

I used that method with Lloyds-TSB online banking too. Quite shocking to see that they'll happily grant you a loan & place the funds into your account, but not (in one transfer) allow you to get the money out!

Is that a business account? And online or over the phone? When I tried to xfer 5k to someone online I couldnt but they let me do 2k one day online, and then 3k the next over the phone (seems the limit is higher over the phone). Stupido!

I recently moved #40K by pushbutton phone txfer from one personal Royal Bank of Scot account to another, immediately. Now I need to check if I can move it out as quickly!

Do ING allow txfers of unlimited size?

What is all this about? I've always been able to write a cheque of any size I had funds for, haven't I?

With their PC Banking you can move between your own RBS accounts immediately with no limit, but not, I think, between yours and someone else's.

In yes, out I don't know. I recently moved nearly 60k, half from RBS to ING, the other half from RBS to HBoS. The former went in one go, because the money is "pulled" from the ING end by Direct Debit, which is apparently not subject to any limit, but the latter had to be "pushed" from the RBS end, and I had to break it up into chunks, moving no more than 10k a day.

It's supposed to be a protection feature against someone mugging you at the computer and transferring all your dosh at once. Or so they say. It's really a ploy to make you pay a TT fee for larger amounts.

Perhaps using a switch card would help? I paid a £30K bill using Switch the other day. Even with pretty stringent identity checking over the phone, it only took about ten minutes start to finish. It might have made things easier that I warned my bank the day before of what I was going to do.
