Sending money abroad.

Is there a limit on the legality of sending money to foreign (non-European) destinations? I am wondering whether it would be legal to transfer £1000 (say) to a location in the Far East for use by a non-British person.

Depends what it is and who it's to. I daresay if you are sending a large sum to Iraq to aid in terrorism or something, then you might be slapped about a bit ;)

If you are sending money to Japan for a guitar, then no you won't be slapped about.

I would be sending money from the UK (my account) to a foreign bank account belonging to a non-British relative permenantly resident in the far east, for them to spend as they wish - a gift of money, in other words (£1000). This needs to be fully legal abd above board. Is it?

It is a 'small' sum anyway. There are no limitations at this end. Check the receivers side. Which country you are speaking about?

While you're at it, ask them what's the limit you can transfer before they have to report it... ;)

In the great majority of circumstances, such a transfer is 100% legal and will pose absolutely no problems. As far as the UK is concerned, you can send your own money as a gift to whomsoever you wish, and a total of GBP 1000 isn't going to involve any bureaucratic hassles. (Very large gifts can involve issues of money laundering and/or Inheritance Tax.) IMHO, the only issues that could arise are the tax treatment of such a gift in the receiving country and the honesty and efficiency of the receiving bank. (Many foreign banks are not averse to holding onto transfers for an inordinate amount of time, during which time they, not your relative, have the use of the money.)
