Water Rates UK

This is a very specific question on UK Water Rates.

Just about to move house to a larger house and we are doing the numbers for affordability. The current owners have told us that their (unmetered) water rates are £130 per month.

That can't be right can it as it's several times what we are paying at the moment?

cheers

Without knowing anything about your prospective new home, it does sound unusual. We are three adults living in a suburban house by London, on a water meter, and we pay about 95ukp every 6 months including sewerage charges.

I'm sure if you ring the water company, they will be able to give you that information.

Incidentally, a number of water companies are now insisting that when you move into a property, if you haven't already got a water meter, then they will come around and install one, regardless of whether you want one or not. You have no right to ask them to remove it, or if you already have a meter installed, you can't ask for it to be removed.

Last years water rates were 416 per year unmetered for water and sewage for a 225 rateable value for me in North Lincolnshire

cheers I think they are mixed up. That must be gas and/electric or it could easily be council tax. The latter is my bet.

Sounds more like council tax to me, unless it is a mansion.

For Some water companies (maybe all) if you ask for a meter and then change your mind, you can go back to unmetered within 12 months (or something like that)

Certainly not all. Three Valley's Water install one when there is a change of owner, and you can't get it uninstalled:

I wonder how many other water companies are using the The Water Industry Act

1991, Section 144B, subsection 2(b) to the full effect?

Bitstring , from the wonderful person Bohica said

Sometimes. My mother is still waiting to get one installed - someone built the road up 25 years ago so the pipe there is too deep for their contractors too fit a meter, and just after that it branches to a standpipe, so a meter in the house won't work.

If you sell the house and a water meter has been installed (but not used) the new owners will not have the choice and will be metered.
