Disputing credit history

An interesting experience.

I checked my credit report and found two judgments on record against me. Both records actually represented a single default judgment of $240 based on a lawsuit that some guy files against me in a remote state in a small claims court. They are duplicates.

I wrote a letter to the credit bureau and said that I dispute these records as they are duplicates of one another. I was hoping that they remove one record and will keep another.

I received a letter back from the c.b. and they said that they removed both records "after careful consideration and research" they removed BOTH records.

Go figure.

It is possible that the credit bureau was not able to document this item, so they pulled it off. It is also possible that the item will be re-reported, and it will get right back on.

This is actually a fairly common occurrence. Some people will dispute everything on their credit record, and then see some or even much of it disappear, getting an instant painless increase in their fico score.

Sounds like there is some logic behind it. Maybe I should do the same for other credit agencies. My only reluctance to do it is that this record should expire this year anyway.

The effect of this on my FICO score was to raise it from 724, to 816.
