Is this the way Credit Reference Companies work?

A few months ago I applied for a credit card - to take advantage of the 0% balance transfer. I was suprised when I was turned down - I had never been in financial dificulties, and have never missed a payments on loans/CCs in about 15 years.

I decided to examine my credit record, and discovered, to my horror, that my credit history had become entangled with someone else with the same name (First,Middle,Last name). Their credit history was not so pristine.

Over the next 2 months, I wrote to each entry on my credit refs (both Experian and Equifax were buggered up with different data), and requested that the erroneous data was removed. At the end of each months, I requested another set of credit refs (each time costing money), and followed up on the entries that still hadn't been removed.

I now hve ANOTHER set of reports, and at this moment in time, there is still

1 item in error on my Reference. I have been told it is being investigated. This item was quite innocuous, a zero CC balance, so I decided to re-apply for the CC that I applied for 2 months ago. I was turned down again.

Would this applying and re-applying affect my Credit Rating? And if so is it possible for me to get these failed applications removed. I now have to check the 'I have been turned down for credit' boxes on any applications, but through no fault of my own.

Is it really up to me to constantly check my Credit Ratings held by these 'Credit Reference' companies? Surely they should ensure it is correct themselves.

You may find that you applied to the same CC company too soon. Often if you apply twice in the same three month period they will just use the data they had on you from your previous application - including the dodgy credit score.

I wouldn't piss about in this situation - use the official complaints procedure plus the Information Commissioner and ask for your expenses to be refunded.

It sounds as if CIFAS might have come into play - check this as well.

Have you thought of ringing the firm and asking? More than once I have resolved such confusion over the phone, and obtained the credit line asked for.

It is well worth writing to the CC company you first applied to and enclose copies of all the detail. They may well change their mind. They probably will not unless you provide documentary evidence.
