First Credit Card

Hi,

I have decided to get myself a credit card. I'm 26 Years old have a decent job (Software deveopler) and regular income. I need a credit card for an immediate purchase of £1000 and want to use a 0% purchase card for as long as I can get - I hope to pay it off in ten months.

I have tried applying for Halifax one card (9 months 0% on Purchases) and Mint (9 months 0% on Purchases) but both took 60 seconds to automaticaly turn me down.

I have had credit before i.e a Store card, student loan and overdraft but I have payed them off no problem.

Does anyone know why I am being turned down automatically i.e. why is my credit score so low?

And is there any credit cards you can recommend that will meet my requirements?

Thanks

Might be an idea to check your credit rating to make sure no ones been using your identity. Even if they havent it will show you details that may not be correct and get them corrected.

Are you on the electoral roll? *thats important*

Some cards are easier to get than others ... generally those which seem to be a really bad deal with huge APR are the ones easiest to get.

Hi,

Yes I am on the electoral role and I have good payment history (I believe) but no credit card payments. I am wary that If I start applying to different credit cards and get declined that this will affect my credit score again. Is this the case?

Thanks

Yes it is, same happened to me when I was a lot younger (18) - in the end I got a Barclaycard - I don't think I got 0% as they were not offering it then but I think they do now - check it out.

I suggest you check out your credit report, you can get a credit report here:

I think one of the other credit reference agencies offer a similar free trial, but I don't have a link for that.

Yes each "look" is recorded on your credit file thing. You should probably check your credit file to make sure there's no wrong info. I had a bit of mess on mine from someone with nearly the same name showing up on mine. Its only a couple of quid for each one and you might find a possible error.

info for both on there CHS Experian is either £2 for a report or you can do a free trial thing of their checker.

Your credit check covers things like mobile phone contracts, catalogue payments etc Its £4 to check both so well worth doing.

My daughter had almost identical circumstances, and was turned down by some CC companies. Suspected no activity showed up on her credit rating. She got Card from Tesco Finance in the end.

Would a debit card not do?

Although the result of the "look" isn't. Most institutions don't attach much importance to searches per se.
