Halifax Credit Card

I just got my monthly statement for my Halifax Platinum credit card. There's a small slip of paper inside to say that their cashback rate is going down to 0.25% and that there will be a max annual payout of 190. This is looking like a pathetic deal now. I'm thinking of changing.

Does anyone know of any cards offering 1% BUT also with any sort of guarantee that they will hold the level of payout for some period of time? Changing credit card is a hassle so I prefer not to get caught out again.

I went for the AmEx Blue. They offer 2% for the first 3 month, then 1% thereafter. I have no idea if they plan to stop this, but I too would be very annoyed if they did.

I decided to dump Halifax before my account with them had even got off the ground. I applied online for their 0% for 9 months offer, but was told I could not be given immediate approval. Within a couple of days an offer appeared in the post saying they regretted they could not approve the original application but that they could offer me another type of card. This came with an introductory rate of 0.75% a month, for 3 months only - not exactly the most attractive deal going.

When the card eventually arrived I found they had given me a credit limit of just £1,000. In view of the fact that Egg had been able to give me a £15,000 credit limit with 0% for 6 months at the end of last year, I considered Halifax's offer derisory. The card went straight back to them by return of post.

Capital One circle have been at 1% for some time now, but it's hard to get the card.

I also think Accucard has been at 0.8% for at least a year now.

People keep saying that, but nobody ever says what's hard - do you mean they have strict criteria for who can have one, or that they keep the application forms downstairs in a locked filing cabinet in a dark room with 'beware of the tigers' on the door, and the stairs have been removed, or what??

There have been some reports in the past - search on google. I believe someone said you have to get the right person the phone to get one.

I got mine before they stopped advertising the card.

"Hard" these days means anything which can't be done online.

They haven't informed me yet. I suppose I'll switch to the Accucard and they'll lose a customer (unless they want me as a 0% customer investing the amount in a high-interest account :-)

Any idea whether I'll get the cashback if I close my account?

I seriously doubt it, since IIRC they credit it to your a/c .. only Morgan Stanley actually send you a cheque, as far as I know. Keep it open until January (when the cashback comes though) and then close it. Or keep it for a backup. You could also write and tell them why they are no longer getting any of your business (I will).

You'll forfeit any cashback accrued to date, even with Morgan Stanley - if you cancel before the next anniversary. Check their small print - you need to have the account active at the anniversary to get the cheque; they won't send you a cheque if you cancel the account beforehand!

Yes .. sorry if you thought I implied otherwise, I didn't mean to. My point was that since Capital One credit your a/c, it is =bound= not to work if you don't have a card anymore. If they sent a cheque, it would at least be =theoretically= possible for them to give you a cashback when you had no card (although, as you say, I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that for you).

I noticed the following comment from someone in the moneysavingexpert.com discussion forum:

"I've just spoken to Capital One (and three of their managers) and they all deny any knowledge of this change - They said it is still 1% for new customers, and didn't know anything about the change"

Who would you trust more to know about what's really going on at Capital One - a manager in Capital One or the Daily Telegraph? I think I'd put my money on the Telegraph. ;-)

Without a hint of irony, "root" astounded uk.finance on

07 Jun 2004 by announcing:

Amex Platinum is 0.5% to 2k, 1% 2-5k then 2% on everything over 5k. Trouble with Amex is acceptance.

Dear valued cardholder, Due to customer feedback your cashback is now small change. Head of Product Improvement.

Egg credit card: "Due to overwhelming demand, we are halving the cashback". They're all the same. Bribe them in, then pull the plug.
