Halifax Credit card offer

The Halifax are offering '0% for 9 months on all balance transfers and purchases'. This seems a good deal but would welcome any comments just in case there is something I have missed. Are there better deals available?

Thanks for any advice.

I suggest you go to the Independent's money site which has a chart comparing these... and I think

does similar.

I am cheesed off about the Halifax deal as I have had a card with them since they first introduced a visa card and my interest is about 18% PA. I cannot get one of these 0% cards so I got a Sainsburys one a few weeks ago. I think it is a good time to get into chasing the 0% deals from these vendors.

My new card from 'The Dogs Trust' has just arrived - 0% on purchases and transfers for 9 months. The card is operated by Bank of Scotland (just like the Sainsbury's one). There is a picture of a jack russel on the front of the card, so if you really like dogs - it's a bon(e)us. The charity also gets something for using the card (although this wasn't my reason for applying for it - I don't normally give anything to charity if I can avoid it).

They snottily told me in my local branch that people with Halifax cards already could not apply for them. A few months after this happened a few of the financial sections in papers did run articles on this about how long-term customers were being screwed by their card vendors - the advice was to move cards.... so I got a Sainsburys one about 6 weeks ago... Next year, if the deals are still on, I will get another one...

Just realised - isn't Sainsbury Bank CC operated by BoS which is now part of the HBOS Group? Wonder who sets the lending criteria for Sainsbury cards - Sainsbury's, BoS or Halifax or HBoS?

All these banks and retailer now jumping into bed with each other makes you wonder who really is in control.

Barclaycard are apparently doing a 0% for 12 months number. But the problem is, you get a Barclaycard. ;-)

The Halifax deal's a decent enough one. Made use of it for a while to reschedule some debt for free until (a) I could liquidate some rather stubborn assets, and (b) the end of the free period.

Funny thing is, because my last payment (clearing the balance) and a transaction refund coincided, I keep getting statements with an in-credit balance, and stern warnings that if it's not "paid off" soon, they're going to start charging interest. I wonder what rate of interest they'll be paying me... ;-)

This certainly isn't the case. I had a standard Halifax Visa for probably around 3 years. When the new One card came out I immediately applied and they transferred my balance onto it for the 9 months (due to run out in November) at 0%. They were very helpful with me, I suggest that whoever you spoke to was unaware that existing customers could switch over.

The Sainsburys card comes out of the HBOS offices in Cardiff whilst my Halifax card comes from their Scottish office - wherever that is.

Or something else... Thanks, I don't have need now but if they continue this into the Winter months I will look at it again... to transfer my 0% Sainsburys card when it runs out in March 2005.

John, my experience is essentially the same as Geordie's.

Had a standard Halifax VISA for a number of years. I read-up on their website about the One card - there was a FAQ about "what if I already have a Halifax card?" which said not to apply the usual way, but to telephone a specific number for "card upgrade to One card".

They actually told me I couldn't "upgrade" my affinity card, but that the standard VISA *could* be "upgraded" - which they did.

Thanks Tim, will keep that in mind if the 0% deal is still running next Jan/Feb.

Dunfermline. It used to come from Cardiff before they merged with Bank of Scotland.
